Doylestown Events: This Weekend is THE Weekend!

Enjoy the arts in the heart of Doylestown PA. Stay at the Hargrave House Bed and Breakfast, 50 South Main Street, in the center of Doylestown. They don’t make small towns like this anymore! Almost everything you want to do is within two blocks of Hargrave House. There’s the Annual Art Festival taking place in the streets of Doylestown on Saturday, September 12/13, just 1 block from Hargrave House. And, there’s the James A. Michener Art Museum which opens the doors to the premier exhibit of Jim Henson’s Fantastic World on Saturday, September 12th through November 29th. This exhibit is the inaugural show in the Della Penna-Fernberger | Paton | Smith Galleries, the new exhibition space that is the center-piece of the Museum’s $12 million expansion. Then Sunday the Univest Grand Prix international Bicycle Race will circle downtown between 10AM and 1:30PM Sunday the 13th.

Have fun walking through the art exhibits and galleries in the streets of downtown on Saturday. Shop and dine at your choice of great restaurants. Attend a movie at our wonderful restored Art Deco County Theater (2 tickets on us!) which features smaller and independent films. Enjoy the night life, and then walk (don’t drive) back to your luxurious jacuzzi and featherbed at the Hargrave House. Have a hearty breakfast cooked in-house especially for you in the mornings. Many of the streets may be closed for events like the Art Festival and bicycle race, but you won’t worry because you are parked (for free) in our private lot. Walk over to the Jim Henson exhibit and enter Jim’s world of Muppets and Sesame characters. (Again 2 tickets on us – And these are untimed tickets, not the timed tickets the Museum sells at the door.)

Our price for this terrific art-filled weekend (Friday and Saturday nights) at the Hargrave House is only $350 to $400 for the weekend – depending on room availability. We are sorry, but only two-night reservations are being taken. If you want to stay over an additional night, add a mere $100 for either Thursday or Sunday nights to this offer. See you soon!

“Dr. William Edgar Geil (1865-1925) Doylestown’s Evangelical World Explorer”

On Thursday, May 28, the Doylestown Historical Society will hold a private opening of an exhibition on the life and work of Dr. William Edgar Geil, a Doylestonian, who explored China, Africa, the Holy Land, and other far-off places. He wrote nine books about his travels and lectured widely in America, England, and Australia. In 1908 was the first person to traverse the Great Wall of China, an 82-day history-making event. In 1912 he and his wife built a large, 30-room concrete mansion about a mile south of Doylestown on Route 611 with a Chinese pagoda behind it. He visited China four times. In Africa he lived among pygmies and cannibals.

The exhibition will be open to the public beginning Saturday, May 30 – Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The Opening will feature a keynote by William Lindesay, founder of “The Friends of the Great Wall,” speaking from Beijing, and in person his staff member Piao, who will bring greetings to the Society.

Professor Arthur Waldron, University of Pennsylvania, prominent China specialist, will also be a speaker.

The exhibition was curated over several months by Marilyn Gustafson Arbor, daughter of Walter R. Gustafson, a local rare book dealer, who preserved Geil’s collection of papers and memorabilia for more than forty years. In 2008 Gustafson’s heirs donated the collection to the Society.

All Around Doylestown

A busy day around our Doylestown Bed and Breakfast today. Our inn keeper, Lorna, was over at Delaware Valley College getting the word out about our renovations and new amenities. We had a meeting and finally ironed out an exceptional corporate rate for weekdays. We also had a real interesting meeting with out neighbor, the Doylestown Historical Society, about their upcoming events (check back for a post about that tonight). After our meeting, I took some pictures of the inn (will be posted soon) and scooted over to Cyborg1, a local store, to pick up a present and a couple other things. The employees were real helpful and friendly and like most Doylestown shopping, the store was inviting and very well organized.

Few towns are as beautiful as Doylestown. There is so much to do and so many great stores to go to. When you come to visit, or even if you’re a local looking for an in town get-a-way, stay Hargrave House. We are the destination for Doylestown lodging and Bucks County Lodging.
